Garbage Day for the Soul

I had a download recently while I was half asleep.

It wasn't something I was thinking about analytically. It just came through.

We take out the garbage in our homes regularly. We don't wait until the house is completely full before doing it.

Why don't we do the same mentally and emotionally?

We collect worries, fears, stress, other people's emotions, old thoughts, things that don't belong to us anymore... and we carry them around.

Some of it we pick up without even realizing it.

We spend time with someone who is stressed, and somehow, we leave carrying some of their stress with us.

We hear about someone else's problems and keep thinking about them long after the conversation is over.

We worry about things that haven't happened yet. We replay things that already happened. We hold on to old fears, old stories, old reactions.

And over time, all of it starts to pile up.

The strange thing is that we often notice when our house is getting cluttered. We know when the garbage needs to go out.

But we don't always notice the same thing happening inside us.

So I got the message that I need to start taking out my mental and emotional garbage regularly — and share the idea with others too.

Make it a habit.

Every garbage day, take a few minutes to empty yourself out as well.

Sit quietly and ask yourself:

What have I been carrying that I don't need anymore?

Don't try to force an answer. Just see what comes up.

Maybe it's a worry you've been carrying all week.

Maybe it's a fear that isn't even yours.

Maybe it's something someone said that you keep replaying.

Maybe it's an emotion you absorbed from someone else.

Maybe it's an old thought that has been taking up space for so long that you forgot it was even there.

You don't have to analyze everything. You don't have to understand exactly where every thought or feeling came from.

Just notice what feels heavy, unnecessary, or no longer belongs with you.

Then consciously let it go.

You can imagine placing it in a garbage bag and taking it outside. You can write it down and throw the paper away. You can imagine it leaving with your breath.

Whatever works for you.

The point isn't to empty yourself completely. We're human. Life will keep giving us things to process.

But we don't have to keep everything.

Some things are meant to be felt and understood.

Some things are meant to teach us something.

And some things can simply be released.

We don't need to keep every worry just because it once entered our mind.

We don't need to keep carrying someone else's emotions just because we care about them.

We don't need to keep holding on to every old thought that has been taking up space.

It's maintenance.

Just like taking out the physical garbage.

We clean our homes. We wash our clothes. We organize our surroundings.

Our inner world needs maintenance too.

So the next time it's garbage day, take a few minutes to take out some of your own garbage as well.

Ask yourself what you've been carrying.

Decide what you still need.

And let go of what you don't.

Garbage day for the house.

Garbage day for the soul.
